A green woodpecker

Today, Donna and I walked in light rain from our home to the Ambiance Cafe in the Riverside Park; it takes all of five minutes. The weather has turned much colder, yesterday I was able to work in the sunshine in the garden and it felt like summer. To do the same this afternoon would demand jeans and a warm, waterproof jacket.

On our way to the cafe Donna stopped abruptly and said, 'Look, a woodpecker!' Sure enough, there, picking its way systematically across the grass looking for ants, was a beautiful green woodpecker. What a wonderful bird!

This species feeds on ants and other small insects. They tend to be shy and fly away when approached too closely so we were delighted when this one tolerated us at about thirty yards. When he did decide enough was enough, he flew to double the distance and continued feeding. It was a real delight and privilege to watch.

We didn't stay long, it was still raining and breakfast was calling to us.
